QUESTION 35-37: GRAMMAR IN USE
PRIMALY ENGLISH OLYMPIAD 1 · 3 lessons
Saturn has the ______ rings in the solar system, making it one of the most recognisable planets.
Correct answer: brightest
- We use the superlative form ("brightest") when comparing something to all others in a group. Saturn's rings are the most prominent compared to every other planet's rings in the solar system.
Why the others are wrong:
- bright (B): This is the base adjective, but it doesn't show any comparison.
- brighter (C): This is the comparative form, used when comparing only two things (e.g., "Saturn's rings are brighter than Jupiter's"). We're comparing to all planets, not just two.
- more bright (D): This is incorrect grammar; we don't say "more bright"—we say either "brighter" (comparative) or "brightest" (superlative).
Johan: Are these art supplies ______? I saw him holding them yesterday. Dyana: No, they are ______. He borrowed them from me.
A. his, mine ✓
Johan is asking if the supplies belong to "him" (a male person), so the first blank needs his (possessive pronoun for a male). Dyana responds that they're not his—they're mine (belonging to Dyana herself, since she lent them to him).
Why the others don't work:
- B (ours, yours): "Ours" suggests shared ownership, and "yours" would mean Johan's supplies, which contradicts Dyana's answer.
- C (her, mine): "Her" doesn't match "him" in the first blank.
- D (his, yours): "Yours" would mean Johan's supplies, but Dyana just said they're not his.
She bought a _______ handbag from the store.
A is correct: In English, adjectives follow a natural order: general qualities (beautiful) come before origin/nationality (Italian), which comes before material (leather). This "adjective order" is how native speakers naturally arrange multiple adjectives.
B is wrong: Putting "beautiful" after "Italian" sounds awkward and unnatural—nationality usually comes before material, not after a quality adjective.
C is wrong: Placing "Italian" at the end breaks the adjective order rule and sounds very strange to English speakers.
D is wrong: Starting with "leather" doesn't make sense—material should come last, and this arrangement sounds completely incorrect.
